Guru Granth Sahib, also known as Gurū Gra°th Sāhib Jī, is considered the central religious scripture of Sikhism. It is highly revered by Sikhs as the final and eternal living Guru in the lineage of the ten human Gurus of the religion, with six of them contributing significantly to its contents. The compilation of the first rendition, called the Adi Granth, was undertaken by Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru, between 1563 and 1606.

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, did not add his own hymns but included all 115 hymns of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, affirming this second rendition as his successor. Subsequently, it became known as Guru Granth Sahib. After Guru Gobind Singh's passing, Baba Deep Singh and Bhai Mani Singh diligently distributed numerous copies of this sacred work.

The text consists of 1430 angs (pages) and 6,000 śabads (line compositions), which are beautifully rendered in a rhythmic ancient north Indian classical form of music. The scripture is mainly organized into thirty-one rāgas, and each Granth rāga is further divided based on length and authorship. The hymns are primarily arranged according to their associated rāgas. Written in the Gurmukhī script, the Guru Granth Sahib incorporates various languages, including Lahnda (Western Punjabi), Braj Bhasha, Khariboli, Sanskrit, Sindhi, and Persian.

While six Sikh Gurus predominantly composed the Guru Granth Sahib - namely Guru Nanak, Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan, and Guru Teg Bahadur - it also incorporates traditions and teachings from fourteen Hindu Bhakti movement saints, such as Ramananda, Kabir, Namdev, and one Muslim Sufi saint, Sheikh Farid.

The vision portrayed in the Guru Granth Sahib envisions a society based on divine justice without any form of oppression. Although it acknowledges and respects the scriptures of Hinduism and Islam, it does not imply moral reconciliation with either religion. The Granth is installed in Sikh gurdwaras (temples), where all Sikhs bow or prostrate before it upon entering. It is revered as eternal gurbānī and the spiritual authority in Sikhism.
